EDIC - Doctoral program in computer, communication and information sciencesEPFL has a rapidly expanding, internationally highly ranked doctoral program in computer, communication and information sciences, offering • Opportunities for cutting-edge research in computer science, communications, information, signal & image processing, and security • Opportunities for exciting interdisciplinary research, such as the Hydroptere, or the EPFL-Alinghi and EPFL-SolarImpulse Scientific Partnerships • Support of all PhD students at competitive salaries • Opportunities for internships in leading industrial labs • Good employment opportunities after PhD (a recent decision by the Swiss government is expected to increase the possibilities for foreign students to work in Switzerland after graduation). EPFL is ranked 15th worldwide and first outside of the USA in the area of engineering and computer science. It has an attractive campus, offering many sports activities. Lausanne is a lively and well-connected city in the center of Europe, close to the Swiss Alps. The duration of the program is 4-5 years, and admission is on a competitive basis (52 students were admitted in 2008). The program is entirely in English and its usual start is in September. During their first year, PhD students take advanced courses, participate in research projects, and pass a candidacy exam in their chosen research area. They are expected to find a thesis supervisor by the end of the first year (sample open PhD positions). PhD students also participate in the teaching activities of the school as teaching assistants. At the time of enrollment in the doctoral program, a student must have a 4- or 5-year Bachelor's degree, or a Master's degree, with a strong background in computer science, communication systems, electrical engineering, mathematics, physics, or a related field. Candidates are invited to submit their application prior to January 15 for early admission, and at the latest by April 15. |
